Episode 16: Amy Behlke
Thursday Feb 14, 2019
Thursday Feb 14, 2019
In this episode of the Intermittent Fasting Stories podcast, host Gin Stephens has a conversation with Amy Behlke, a middle school teacher and ardent supporter of intermittent fasting. Amy did not struggle with her weight until she was about halfway through her 30s, and then any successful method she used to help her lose weight proved to be unsustainable. Last March, she had a kind of epiphany, realizing that she wanted to enjoy life, and that her health/fitness stood in the way of this desire. Her husband had been toying with IF and seeing results, and though she was at first skeptical, Amy decided over her summer break to give IF a try. The first few days were challenging, but having endured the initial transition in her lifestyle, Amy noticed positive changes. She later learned about clean fasting, and changing to a clean fast helped her to see even greater changes in her body and life.
Though on different schedules, Amy and her husband keep an IF lifestyle together. He has lost about 80 pounds through IF combined with restricting his carb and sugar intake. His blood pressure has also improved, and he is no longer pre-diabetic. Amy did not have quite as much weight to lose as did her husband, but she is down about 40 pounds from her 199-pound starting weight, and has seen exciting change even in small ways as her hair and skin have improved and her feet no longer hurt. She also finds that IF helps her to be more positive and engaged in life. More profoundly, though, Amy was helped by IF to navigate the Camp Fire tragedy that struck her community. She was so focused on the events surrounding the fire that she did not think much about food, and was not distracted by the need for it. Her physical and emotional health, improved by IF, helped her to handle the tragedy well.
Though her daily fasting schedule changed as she went through the experience of the Camp Fire and its aftermath, as well as the holidays, Amy has settled on roughly a 21-3 schedule. She and her husband use food as a means of celebration, and enjoy cooking and eating good food together. Their diets and tastes have been altered by IF, and their healthier food choices have also trickled down to their children’s diets. Amy thinks that she will probably seek to maintain her weight at this point rather than to lose more weight, but she is committed to IF as a lifestyle that she will adhere to permanently. She advises those new to IF to be patient and open-minded. She wants them to know that there is more to IF than weight loss and that IF promises both an overall increase in quality of life and personal control in the realm of eating. She counsels these new-to-IF listeners to believe that IF is truly worthwhile. And as for her, the next step is joining her husband in being a more public representative of and advocate for IF.

Episode 15: Rachel Awad
Thursday Feb 07, 2019
Thursday Feb 07, 2019
In this episode of the Intermittent Fasting Stories podcast, host Gin Stephens interviews international educational worker Rachel Awad about her adventure with intermittent fasting. Rachel is from Philadelphia, and started intermittent fasting in 2017 after trying weight-watchers and a host of other methods before finally discovering Gin’s book on an expat forum. She promptly ordered the book, and started IF right after that.
Rachel and Gin discuss how people sometimes don’t stick properly to diets and weight programs, because they choose to incorporate only parts that they feel are suitable for them, or miss the fine print. This usually results in – no results. Rachel realized that she could do 20-hour fasts and stick to one meal during the day since she started IF. However, she has occasional weight gain issues, mainly when she comes back to the States, because she indulges in food not available abroad. This shows that IF is not a solution for every weight problem and every bad eating habit.
What she noticed on the positive side is that her energy has improved; she was losing weight in a slow but stable manner (a pound per week on average,) and she feels great in general. Her blood sugar and pressure levels are also normalized, and she gained a lot more confidence and willpower. She also improved her diabetes condition, as fasting is known to improve insulin resistance (and sometimes even reverse diabetes and pre-diabetes.) Gin and Rachel discuss how IF can help directly improve these conditions, instead of treating the symptoms as is often done by taking insulin medications. By fasting, Rachel recently officially and amazingly scored as low pre-diabetic, after previously being diagnosed as diabetic. IF also provides metabolic and hormonal benefits that you don’t get if you simply do calorie restriction (i.e. just eating less food/calories.) This is the reason why advice such as “eat less-move more” doesn’t work that well in the long run without applying IF in parallel, as the body adapts to the new calorie input and enters conservation mode.
Rachel also shares that she switched from the daily window fasting to alternate day fasting (a day of fast for a day of food.) What she does is practically keep a 6-8 hour eating window within each 48 hours (which translates into 40 hours of fast,) during which she has 2 meals. Although this looks intimidating, Rachel shares that it is not, as the same food cravings appear – and they are identically surmountable. However, if you should do what feels right for you.
Nonetheless, be careful with going overboard. Sometimes people believe that, since fasting is good, more fasting is good. Going over the top with fasting-vs-eating window ratio can bring adverse consequences. Your body may begin thinking you are experiencing famine, so it will kick into conservation mode which will dramatically decrease your energy, motivation, and mental clarity. Additionally, very short eating windows prevent getting enough nutrient content because it is physically impossible to eat large amounts of diverse food during this time.
To wrap up the episode, Rachel shares her advice concerning starting and pursuing IF. Try not to over-complicate things – keep it focused and simple. Also, don’t be intimidated by the different fasting protocols, try to feel your way around them and see if they fit you more than what you are currently following. We are all different, and different regimes fit us best.
